Parking in Mykonos Town: Where to Leave the Car

Parking in Mykonos Town is a real question the moment you drive in, because the centre of Chora is closed to cars and the streets narrow into paths built for feet, not tyres.

Why is Mykonos Town closed to cars?

Chora, the old town at the heart of Mykonos, was built centuries before anyone imagined a car. The lanes twist between whitewashed walls, widen into small squares and narrow again, and most are barely wide enough for two people to pass with bags. The town keeps them free of traffic on purpose. It protects the buildings, keeps the walking safe at night, and it is part of why the evening feels the way it does, lanterns, open doors, the sound of people rather than engines. If you are driving in from the airport, the port or a villa outside town, plan to stop before you reach the old streets.

Where do people actually park?

Cars stop at the edges of Chora, not inside it. The main areas drivers use are around the old port, near the archaeological museum, and along the road that leads in from the south, close to the bus station. These fill early in July and August, especially in the hour before dinner when everyone is arriving at once. None of them are a short flat walk from the upper town. Expect ten to fifteen minutes on foot, longer if you are unsure of the lanes, and wear shoes that can handle stone underfoot.

Does a restaurant reservation change where I park?

It can, if the restaurant offers valet. We are in the upper part of Chora, a short walk from Little Venice and the Windmills, and we offer complimentary valet parking for guests arriving by car. You leave the car at our entrance and someone else deals with it, which on a hot evening after a day at the beach is worth more than it sounds. It also means you are not circling the same three streets at 19:45 looking for a gap that will not appear. If you plan to drive to us, mention it when you book so the team knows to expect you.

What about taxis and scooters?

Taxis are scarce on Mykonos relative to demand, and in peak season a wait at a taxi rank can run long. Scooters and ATVs get closer to the old town than a car will, since a moped can be parked in far less space, but they still stop short of the pedestrian core and you finish on foot regardless. Many visitors staying in Chora itself skip vehicles entirely for the evening and walk, which on this island, with the town lit up and the sea visible from most of the high points, is not really a hardship.

What time should I set off to avoid the crush?

If dinner is at 19:30, the smart move is to allow real time before that, not after. Parking areas near the port and the museum are busiest in the thirty minutes before most restaurants open for the evening, and again around 21:30 when the later seating arrives. Leaving with margin, twenty minutes more than you think you need, turns a stressful arrival into a normal one. It also means you reach the table calm instead of rushed, which matters more than it sounds when the evening ahead is a long one.

Is there a shortcut if I am unsure where to go?

Call ahead. Our number is +30 22890 28788, and the team can talk you through the closest practical stopping point for wherever you are coming from, and confirm the valet for your arrival. Questions like this come up often enough that we would rather answer them on the phone than have you circling the harbour road wondering if you took a wrong turn. You can find more on getting here and booking generally on our FAQ page.

Does parking change how I should plan the rest of the evening?

A little. If you know parking near the centre is tight, it makes sense to build in walking time both ways, and to think about the evening as a whole rather than just the meal. Guests who come for our tasting menu tend to arrive with time to spare rather than rushing in at the last minute, and that unhurried start carries through the rest of the night. If you are still deciding where to eat at all, our guide to where to eat in Mykonos Town covers the wider picture, and our own menu is there when you are ready to choose.
